el instituto geográfico militar (igm) es un organismo dependiente del ejército de chile, siendo el servicio oficial, técnico y permanente del estado en todo lo referido a la geografía de chile y el desarrollo de la cartografía del país. el igm fue creado en 1881 como el servicio geográfico del ejército hasta que alcanzó su institucionalidad actual el 29 de agosto de 1922 a través del decreto n°1664. el desarrollo de importantes trabajos de cartografía y levantamientos, permitió que el 30 de julio de 1930 a través del dfl n° 2.090 se le confirió la responsabilidad de ser la autoridad oficial del estado para la confección de cartas y levantamientos del territorio nacional. habiendo abarcado la casi totalidad del territorio nacional con cartografía regular a diferentes escalas, el igm está ahora dedicado a la obtención de cartografía actualizada en formato digital para ser empleada como base de aplicaciones de sistemas de información geográfica (sig) y disponer de un producto digital acorde con las nuevas tecnologías de tratamiento de información. el igm se destaca dentro de sus similares por la calidad de sus productos, el alto porcentaje de cubierta cartográfica regular del país finalizado, junto al alto conocimiento y profesionalismo de su personal. dentro del campo de la divulgación de las ciencias geográficas, el igm realiza una permanente e importante labor científica y cultural al promover seminarios, conferencias y otros encuentros científicos en distintas disciplinas de las ciencias geográficas. además, mantiene un programa regular de visitas a sus instalaciones dirigido a estudiantes en general, los que de esta manera tienen acceso a los procesos de producción cartográfica. la labor del igm está respaldada por más de 80 años de experiencia y, actualmente, cuenta con un importante número de profesionales especializados en geografía, cartografía, geodesia, fotogrametría, procesamiento de imágenes, entre otros temas.
