skulpt, previously convergence medical devices, is developing technology to quantify muscle health and fitness. using electrical impedance myography (eim), our devices measure the quality of muscle in a noninvasive, painless, fast, and accurate way. eim is based on the observation that current flows differently in healthy muscle than in sick muscle. by measuring how well the current flows through muscle, we can measure how sick it is and track improvement or decline. our technology is based on more than a decade worth of research at harvard, mit, and other leading universities that has resulted in dozens of peer-reviewed publications. co-founder, dr. seward rutkove, professor at harvard medical school, received prize4life’s $1m als biomarker prize for showing that eim is an exceptional biomarker in als (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as lou gehrig’s disease. his research demonstrated the potential to reduce the cost of phase 2 clinical trials by 50 percent or more, which could facilitate more rapid development of new and better treatments for als. our investigational devices are currently being used in clinical trials at more than 20 top research universities and hospitals across the us. these studies include patients ranging from newborns with spinal muscular atrophy (sma) to older adults experiencing sarcopenia. they are being conducted with partners from academia, industry, patient groups and others who share our mission to help find therapies for patients with neuromuscular disorders.
