Email Sequence
A series of pre-written, automated emails sent to a prospect over time to nurture engagement and drive a response.
An email sequence is a series of emails sent automatically at predetermined intervals to a prospect who has not yet responded. Unlike a one-off email, a sequence creates multiple opportunities for engagement by approaching the prospect from different angles with varied messaging. Most cold outreach sequences consist of three to seven emails spread over two to four weeks.
The structure of an effective sequence follows a deliberate arc. The first email introduces your value proposition and establishes relevance. Subsequent emails might share a case study, highlight a specific pain point, offer social proof, or provide a relevant resource. The final email in the sequence is often a breakup email that politely signals you will stop reaching out unless the prospect indicates interest. Each email should offer standalone value while building on the narrative of previous messages.
For email sequences to work, you need accurate, verified email addresses. Sending a carefully crafted five-email sequence to an invalid address wastes time and damages your sender reputation.
Key Points
- A series of automated emails sent at defined intervals to unresponsive prospects
- Typically consists of three to seven emails over two to four weeks
- Each email should provide unique value and approach the prospect differently
How It Works
You create a series of email templates with defined delays between each send. When a prospect is enrolled, the first email is sent immediately, and subsequent emails follow the scheduled intervals. If the prospect replies at any point, they are automatically removed from the sequence to prevent further automated follow-ups.
Best Practices
- Vary the messaging angle in each email rather than repeating the same pitch
- Include a clear, low-friction call to action in every email of the sequence
